The renovation of a school in Opwijk demanded more capacity for both the primary school and kindergarten, as well as additive flexible zones for governmental activities such as meetings, after school care and yearly festivities. Our design proposal implements two rectangular volumes on the terrain which serve the primary school and the kindergarten. The convergence of these two buildings at the corner of the site transforms the space ahead into a micro square. In this node the main entrance reveals itself. A canopy shelters the entrance and creates an axis that carries school activities. Thereby it directs the movements in the morning and evening. The playground is designed as a large, open space. The large stairs form the subject of smaller school festivities and ensures entrance to the roof. On the rooftop both a recreational and educational space is designed where one can garden or where meetings of governmental instances can be hold.
